Why study journalism with us?
At Kisoro Municipal Vocational Training College, you learn by doing. Our practicing studio gives you hands-on experience with professional equipment, from Sony 4K cameras to Premiere Pro editing, so you graduate ready to compete in the world market.
Journalism is about the people you serve
The camera, microphone, and laptop you carry aren't tools for fame. They are tools for service. If your story does not serve the voiceless, you have failed.
Master the basics
Everyone wants to be on TV. Few want to learn how to white-balance a camera, hold a microphone, or write a simple intro in 20 words. In our department, you will:
- Know your camera shots
- Learn to write clearly and accurately
- Learn to edit
- Understand media law
- Practice journalism ethics
Five pillars that never change
Technology will change. Today it’s 4K cameras; tomorrow it will be AI and phones. But whether you report on TikTok, Television or Radio, five principles remain:
Accuracy, Fairness,· Balance, Objectivity, and Humanity
Courage, with wisdom
Good journalism will make you unpopular. Expose corruption, and the corrupt will hate you. Report fairly on politics, and both sides will say you are against them. That means you are doing it right.
Be courageous, but be wise. Be bold, but be factual. No story is worth your life, but some stories are worth risking your comfort.
“Journalism is not a job for those who want to be loved. It is a job for those who want to serve the truth.” Be a journalist
In Uganda today, journalism is under pressure from economics, politics, technology, and fake news. But pressure is what creates diamonds.
Do not be an activist pretending to be a journalist. Do not be a public relations officer pretending to be a journalist. Be a journalist.
Verify. Verify. Verify. Then publish. The day you stop asking questions is the day you stop being a journalist.
Mirror, watchdog, bridge
The journalist’s role in society is threefold:
- A mirror that reflects society truthfully
- A watchdog that barks when power misbehaves
- A bridge that connects the governed and those who govern
Go out. Shoot straight. Write fair. Speak truth. Let your camera be the eye of the voiceless, and your pen the voice of the silenced.
