What is Fashion and Design at KIMUVOTI?
Many people think fashion is just tailoring. At KIMUVOTI, it is taught as a technical science. According to the Ministry of Education and Uganda's TVET trainers, Fashion and Garment Design is built on three core units: Technology (textiles science, trade calculations, human anatomy, sewing machine mechanism), Pattern Drafting (the architectural blueprint of a garment), and Practical Garment Construction.
The department offers both short competence courses of 3-9 months examined by DIT, and is applying to start offering National Certificate in Fashion and Garment Design (NCFD)

What Students Learn

The training is 80% practical and 20% theory. Students are trained in:

  • Pattern Drafting I & II and Grading: How to draw accurate body measurements and create garment blueprints.
  • Textile Science and Fabric Knowledge: Understanding different fabrics, fabric coloration, and batik.
  • Garment Making Practical: Making clothes for men, women, and children, including school uniforms, office wear, and traditional wear like mushanana and kitenge.
  • Fashion Illustration and Sketching: Drawing designs before sewing.
  • Embroidery and Decoration: Adding value to garments through machine and hand embroidery.
  • Entrepreneurship and Business Skills: How to price, market, and start your own tailoring shop, which is the core mission of KIMUVOTI.
  • Students learn using modern equipment and also have access to Wi-Fi

Why Fashion and Design at KIMUVOTI is Important for Kisoro

  1. Job Creation: Kisoro district has over 250,000 people, mostly subsistence farmers. Fashion gives youth the skills to be self-employed instead of searching for jobs that don't exist.
  2. Affordable Fashion for the Community: Students provide affordable, well-fitting school uniforms and office wear for the local community.
  3. Preserving Culture: Students learn to modernize local Kifumbira cultural wear for tourism, especially with Bwindi Impenetrable National Park nearby.
  4. Pathway to University: As the proprietor noted, KIMUVOTI aims to become a university in the future, so a certificate here is a pathway to a diploma and degree.

Career Opportunities after Graduation

A graduate in Fashion and Design from KIMUVOTI can become:

  • Fashion Designer / Tailor
  • Pattern Maker for factories
  • Bridal wear specialist
  • Uniform supplier for schools
  • Fashion entrepreneur and trainer
  • Employed in textile industries in Kampala and Kigali

Conclusion

Fashion and Design at Kisoro Municipal Vocational Training Institute is not just about sewing. It is a science, a business, and a tool for transforming lives in Kisoro. As Principal Tumwizere emphasizes, if students love their course, they will benefit from it in the future. In a world where everyone wants to look good, a skill in fashion will never go out of market.
